Sam Washington, Jr.
Founder of the Sam Washington Foundation
Sam Washington is a former standout athlete who excelled in football and basketball at Brother Rice High School. He continued his basketball career at Robert Morris University and University of Alaska Anchorage. Throughout his basketball journey, Sam had the opportunity to play with and compete against some of the game’s greatest legends, including George Gervin, Julius Erving, Magic Johnson, Larry Bird, and Isiah Thomas. Today, he brings the same passion, leadership, and commitment to service through the Sam Washington Foundation, dedicated to making a positive impact in the community.
The eldest son of the late Sam Washington, Sr., founder and creator of St. Cecilia Gym, located in Detroit, Michigan, in 1967. The Saint was founded in an effort to provide shelter for youth and teens and later became a haven to measure skills against the best players in the country.
In 2015, Sam Washington continued his father’s legacy by starting the Sam Washington Foundation 501c3. We focus on three core principles: youth development, community responsiveness and, providing a safe haven for the city of Detroit’s youth.
Sam’s goal is to “help make a difference, provide avenues for the youth to be productive citizens, and encourage reaching for the moon, because if they miss, they can always become a star.”
